OVERVIEW OF COVID-19

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, a type of coronavirus. This disease causes a pandemic. Patients with COVID-19 may experience fever, dry cough, and difficulty breathing. Sore throat, runny nose, or sneezing are less common. In the most susceptible patients, the disease can lead to pneumonia and multiorgan failure.

The lungs are the organs most affected by this disease because the virus enters the host cell via the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), which is most abundant in the type II alveolar cells of the lung. SARS-CoV-2 uses a specialized cell surface containing a glycoprotein called a "spike" to bind to ACE2 and enter the host cell.

The specific gravity of ACE2 in each tissue is related to the severity of the disease. It is hypothesized that decreased ACE2 activity provides protection against host cells because overexpression of ACE2 will lead to infection and replication of SARS-CoV-2. ACE2 is the pathway for the SARS-CoV-2 virus to cause heart damage, so patients with a history of heart disease have the worst prognosis.

SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19

Symptoms of COVID-19

Infected people may have mild symptoms, such as fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. In some cases, Covid-19 sufferers were also asymptomatic. Symptoms of diarrhea or an upper respiratory infection (eg sneezing, runny nose and sore throat) are less common. Cases can progress to severe pneumonia, multiorgan failure, and death.

Washing hands with soap, keeping a distance from people who are coughing & not touching the face with unclean hands are the recommended steps to prevent this disease.
